Anemia is a condition that develops when there is shortage of red blood cell or hemoglobin. The hemoglobin is part of the red blood cell and the red blood cells help us transport oxygen to part of our body.

The normal red blood cells live for 120 days but in sickle cell disorder, the red blood cell lives for 10 – 20 hence there is shortage of the red blood cells. This shortage causes anemia and is called sickle cell anemia.

Nutrition is important when it comes to sickle cell. The foods we eat can also serve as medicine. Strive to eat proper nutritional foods.

Five foods that help fight anemia

Foods that are rich in folates and vitamin B12 helps to produce more red blood cells, plan to add them to your diet. There are various types of anemia but the peculiar one to sickle cell is the red blood cell deficiency anemia. Hence, there is need to eat foods rich in folate.

1. Oranges

Oranges are great source of vitamin c and also rich in iron and fiber. They are great in supplying our bodies with iron. Other foods rich in vitamin c and can help fight anemia are strawberries, tomatoes.

2. Beans

Beans are not just tasty and proteinous, they are also good sources of iron. They are also cheap and very nutritious. You can try other variations like soybeans, black beans as well.

3. Livers

If you are lover of organ meats like me, then you’d agree to the great taste of liver. But not just the taste, livers are great sources of iron and folate that are effective in fighting anemia.

4. Heart

Just like livers, the heart is a good source of iron and folate as well.

5. Cashew nuts

Generally, most nuts gives the body iron but cashew nuts are great for iron production.

When planning a meal that can help you fight anemia, aim for foods that are rich in iron, vitamin B12, vitamin C and folate.

Be aware

Truly, sickle cell anemia is not the iron deficiency anemia but taking natural foods that contain iron is good. What is not good or advisable is taking supplements that contains iron because the overload of iron might cause harm to the organs.

It is extremely important to talk to your doctor before taking any supplement.
